Doors Open to see inside Temperance Hall

Haverfordwest Heritage are offering another opportunity to see inside the unique Grade II listed Temperance Hall as part of Cadw’s Open Doors season this September. The building has stood vacant since 2009, but is now planned to be renovated and brought to life as a community arts venue.

Temperance Hall, located in the heart of Haverfordwest, is a Grade II listed building with a rich history dating back to 1888. Originally constructed as a place for promoting temperance and abstinence from alcohol, it has served various purposes throughout its lifetime. In its early years, the hall was used by the Temperance Society and briefly as a council meeting chamber. As time went on, its function evolved, becoming a cinema during the First World War and later a billet for Dutch soldiers during the Second World War.  Many local people may still remember when it was used as Bingo Hall or a venue for functions.

What’s On

Join us to find out more about Haverfordwest, about Temperance Hall, about printmaking, or about all of this…

  • Temperance Hall will be open, and Haverfordwest Heritage staff and volunteers will be on hand to discuss the building and our future plans.

  • Haverfordwest Printmakers will be facilitating some FREE printmaking activities for you and your family to have go.

  • There will be a display relating to the building's history, and an opportunity to see plans for its re-opening in 2025.

  • There will also be a chance to join a short walking tour (approx 45 mins) of the nearby parts of central Haverfordwest, to see a number of other heritage buildings.

Please note: Numbers of the walking tour groups will be limited. Signing-up to participate in a tour will be on a first-come, first-served basis - only available on the day. Participants will need to have reasonable mobility in order to be able to navigate the streets and hills of the town centre.

Accessibility

The renovation of Temperance Hall will improve accessibility, but currently the hall is in a state of disrepair with a number of potential hazards. The building is also only accessible via a set of steps at the front. (see photograph above).

Unfortunately this means that it may not be safe for younger unsupervised children, and it will be difficult to access for those with limited mobility.

There are no working toilets in the building.

At other stages of the renovation process, Haverfordwest Heritage will be working with the printmakers to host family friendly, accessible events at HaverHub.
